Mt Pemigewasset - 5/Oct/97

By David Metsky

After the previous day's hike we were looking for something a little shorter, with more views. Fortunately the weather cooperated and we settled on Mt Pemigewasset or Indian Head. You park in the Flume Visitor's Center parking area, as far north as you can. The trailhead is on the bike path, just a 100 feet from the parking lot. It takes you under the highway and then starts climbing. The route isn't that steep, but enough to make you notice that you're going up. There were lots of people on the trail and we kept speeding up to pass people or stepping aside to let others come down.

The leaves were in peak color, absolutely perfect. The top of the mountain is a large open ledge with views mainly to the south and west, towards Moosilauke. We took some group shots then put on some wind gear and headed around the corner to a less exposed lunch spot. From there we had a wonderful view of Franconia Notch. Some folks in the group had hiked Franconia ridge the previous day and were envious of the view that people today were getting.
